In my last post we began to examine the truths found in Ephesians 1:3-6; Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has crowned us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ; even as, in His love, He chose us as His own in Christ before the creation of the world, that we might be holy and without blemish in His presence. For He pre-destined us to be adopted by Himself as sons through Jesus Christ–such being His gracious will and pleasure– to the praise of the splendor of His grace with which He has enriched us in the beloved One (Weymouth New Testament).
I began by exponding on the truth that our heavenly Father chose us to be His sons in Christ before the creation of the world because He loved us. In this post we will begin to consider what it means to be crowned with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. What does it mean to be crowned? According to Webster’s Dictionary to be crowned means to be invested with a crown or with regal power and dignity; to be rewarded with distinction; to be completed or perfected.
God disticntly separated man from the rest of creation by making man in His own image bestowing upon man the agency of free will. This distinction separates man giving him superior nobility above the rest of creation. When Father blew His breath of life into Adam, he became a living soul infused and animated by Father’s divine-spirit nature. No other creature was crowned with the spiritual blessing of this heavenly dignity. Dignity is defined as true honor. However, true honor requires a noble and elevated mind consisting of a high sense of propriety, truth, and justice. A dignity anchored in moral rectitude which not only opposes, but abhors, all meaness of manner, oppression, and vice-all these being incompatible with the Father’s dignity of mind. Father gave man the capacity to not only intimately know the divine dignity of His mind, but to embrace it, and conduct himself in accordance to all holy thought so as to live in union with the Godhead, his fellow man, and all of creation. In this state every man, whether male or female, had the regal authority to become mature sons of God. However, Adam’s sinful disobedience corrupted the dignity of man’s mind so completely and quickly that in one generation Adam’s son Cain murdered his brother Abel. How precipitous was man’s fall from from his elevated place in creation.
Adam’s single devestating act of sinful disobedience forfeited the heavenly dignity of the human soul Father crowned it with subsequently inflicting sin, lawlessness and corruption upon all mankind. Consequently, mankind was instantly plunged into spiritual darkness, alienated from the divine life of God, to be dominated by a corrupt carnal nature wholly given over to the base desires of the flesh and opposing everything spiritual. Man also lost the power to become the sons of God and subsequently became the children of disobedience being ruled by the prince of the power of the air-Satan himself (Ephesians 2:2). How overwhelmingly devastating these consequences must have been to our first parents! However, as I stated in the previous post, Father’s foreknowledge anticipated this trajedy and His unconditional love remedied it in Christ before the creation of the world. So let us move forward to that moment when Father’s remedy becomes our reality.
When we are born from above through receiving Christ as our Lord and Savior we are immediately restored to the original intent. God pre-destined every redeemed believer to be adopted to Himself by Christ, re-instating to us the authority to become the sons of God through Christ. It is at the very moment of spiritual regeneration that the Father begins the process of re-creating His adopted sons in the very image of His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. At the same instant the truths of our subject text become a part of our new reality in the spirit. Paul taught that if any man be in Christ he is, at that very moment, a new creation; old things are at once passed away, and all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). At that precise instant we are crowned with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. Our redeemed minds can now progressively and intimately come to know the divine dignity of Father’s thoughts toward us which in turn stirs our spirit-man to cry out for complete restoration to the place of divine dignity and significance originally intended for man as the sons of God.
In Romans 12:1-2, Paul termed this restorative process the renewing-or as the Greek implies-the renovating of our minds. As we renew the spirit of our mind, being taught by Holy Spirit in the Word (which is His Logos or thoughts) the Spirit of truth reveals to us both the Father’s and Son’s mind in all things for they are of the same mind in all things. As we embrace their perspectives, purposes, and passions as our own, our thoughts are thereby elevated to the dignity of the divinine mind, and our thinking becomes spiritually orientated (Romans 8:5). This re-orientation of our mind directs our affections to the things above which are the spiritual realities and blessings found only in the spiritual heavenly realms. This renewing is the only thing that will answer and satisfy the hunger of our newly awakened spirit-man for our spirit-man cannot be satisfied with natural understanding and carnal desires. Infact, our spirit wars against carnality and natural understading (Galatians 5:17) longing to be filled with the knowledge of Father’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Col. 1:9-10) for the very purpose of conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 2:16; Paul called this “having the mind of Christ”or agreeing with Father’s view . In Philippians 2:5 he exhorts saints to let the very mindset of Christ be in them as was exampled in Christ’s condescension into humanness, His willingness to lay down His own reputation to be a servant of all, and to become obedient to death, even the death of the cross. This humility of mind is most precious to the Father. It was the Lord’s, it was Paul’s, and it is to be ours.
The transforming power of the process of renewing the spirit of our minds progressively conforms us to the image of the Son which was Father’s intent all along-to have a vast family of Sons completely conformed to and perfected in the full virtuous stature of His glorious Eternal Son; and through whose humble minds He could demonstrate to all principality and all power in the heavenly realms His manifold wisdom (Ephesians 3:10).
Oh dear fellow believer, you were born again to a most noble and dignified purpose for which Father has crowned you with every spiritual blessing His infinite wisdom could conceive that you might attain to and fulfill His purpose; and in so doing He might glorify Himself and His Son in you. This is why apostolic doctrine exhorts us to lay aside all manner of evil speaking: corrupt and filthy communication, all malice of thought, flattery, duplicity, vain speaking, and foolish jesting and to speak graciously that only which edifies and builds up(Ephesians 4:29). These corrupt communications do not dignify the divine mind of the Father which is supposed to be ours as His sons. Such communications proceed forth from the corrupt and defiled nature of our old man which has been crucified in Christ. If we are to be the sons of God, then we must speak from the dignity with which we have been crowned by always speaking the truth in love and manifesting the divine mind of our heavenly Father. By the grace of God may we think, speak, and act within the divine dignity of our Father’s mind. Consider the following passage in light of we we have put forth in this post.
Clossians 3:1-10; If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
We will continue on in my next post.
